Roads, railroads and bridges are fundamentals for national development and prosperity. Living standards advance as the number of roads increases, and the farther they stretch, the nearer the future comes to reality. GS E&C has promoted balanced regional development and national economic progress in Korea by engaging in numerous Civil engineering and infrastructure projects, both publicly and privately financed, that involve roads, railroads and bridges. Projects of special note include the West Sea Grand Bridge, which at 7.31 kilometers is the world’s tenth longest, and the expressway leading to the new Incheon International Airport. In the future, the Civil Engineering Division will focus on expanding involvement in turnkey infrastructure projects financed by the private sector, including highways and railroads.

Developing usable space underground can help alleviate the lack of available space aboveground, and underground projects will become more important in the 21st century. GS E&C has researched soil dynamics, rock dynamics, excavation technology and other areas and applied its wealth of experience to enhance competencies regarding underground space development. The company has participated in mass transportation projects, including subway tracks and stations for Seoul Subway Line 5 Section 35 and Line 6 Section 10 as well as the Hopo Subway Yard in Busan. Other important projects include underground oil storage tanks at Yeosu, an LNG terminal at Incheon, and the water tunnel. In the future, GS E&C will be more involved in underground projects to help protect the environment and improve space utilization in crowded urban areas.

Korea, a small and densely populated country, is surrounded by water on three sides. This extensive coastline offers ample opportunity for reclaiming badly needed land from the sea. Harbors represent the starting point for land reclamation, and logistics infrastructure is a key driver of the national economy. LG E&C has gained much experience by building a private jetty accommodating vessels of up to 100,000DWT for LG Chemical and a product jetty for LG Caltex-Oil at Yeocheon as well as an LPG offloading terminal at Incheon. The Civil Engineering Division will invest aggressively to secure more core technology related to harbor development and turn this business into a growth engine for the future.
